Who Was Jesus?

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven's glory and will return again to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; I Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13

What is Salvation?

Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin's penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

Romans 5:1, 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26

Baptism

What is Baptism?

Baptism is a public display of faith in Jesus Christ. It publicly announces that you have given your life to Christ, accepting that you are not perfect (sinful) and in need of a Savior, and that you are not ashamed of your relationship with Jesus. It is the symbolic WASHING AWAY of one's old self, and the acceptance of a new self and life in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17). The act of baptism can be defined as an outward expression of an inward decision.

What Does Baptism Mean?

1. Baptism illustrates Jesus' DEATH and RESURRECTION. "Christ DIED for our sins... He was buried... He was RAISED from the dead" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). "For your were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with Him you were raised to NEW LIFE because you have trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead" (Colossians 2:12). 2. Baptism illustrates NEW LIFE as a Christian. "For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live news lives (Romans 6:4). 3. Baptism doesn't make you a believer-it shows that you already believe. Baptism does not "save" you. Only your faith in Christ saves you. Baptism is like a wedding ring-it's the outward symbol of the commitment you make in your heart.

Why Do We Get Baptized?

To follow the example set by CHRIST and because Christ commanded it. "One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized..." (Luke 3:21). "Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, BAPTIZING them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19).

How Do We Baptize?

We baptize by immersion, which means to be placed completely under water. We baptize by immersion for three reasons.

  1. Jesus was baptized that way. "As Jesus was coming up out of the water..." (Mark 1:10)

  2. Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion. "He ordered the carriage to stop and they went down into the water, and     Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water..." (Acts 8:38-39)

  3. The very word baptize means to immerse or submerge.

What If I Was Baptized as a Baby?

That's a great question. Baptism is a personal decision. If you were baptized and it wasn't your decision, the Bible says you should be baptized again, this time with the full knowledge of your commitment. Also, an infant would not have a salvation testimony to communicate to the church.

I Want to Get Baptized.

Let us know by calling the church office to talk to a pastor. If you have any further questions, come forward at the conclusion of any service and ask a counselor to be baptized. They will ask you about your salvation experience at that time.

The Flow

Here at OVC, we strive to accomplish our mission at every level and our discipleship strategy is designed to mobilze believers to minister the Word of God to the world.

Matthew 28:18-20

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

KNOWING GOD & HIS SALVATION

You were designed to be a part of a church family. A healthy and harmonious family has common beliefs, purposes and commitment. That’s why at OVC we want you to know Jesus Christ and His salvation. We want to share with you who we are as a church, what we believe and where we’re going.

KNOW is the basic introduction to our church family and is designed to clearly explain who and what the church is. This session is broken into four parts covering: Our Salvation, Statements, Strategy and Structure.

At the end of the session there will be an opportunity for you to become a member of the church, or you can wait and decide at another time. No pressure whatsoever, we want you to be informed and comfortable with your decision.

GROWING IN CHRIST & HIS WORD

All Christians eventually ask the same questions: How can I get closer to God? How can I live more and more like Jesus? How can I grow in my faith? Where do I start? This session is designed to answer these and many other questions.

During GROW, you will learn four habits that will energize or renew your spiritual life: bible reading, prayer, giving and relationships.

GIVING OF TIME, TALENT & TREASURE

When you became a Christian, God gave you salvation and the hope of eternity in heaven. He also gave you purpose and significance in your life now. He has given each of us the opportunity to serve others and make a real difference in someone’s life. When you serve others in Jesus’ name, that’s called ministry.

At OVC, we believe that every member of our church is a minister. This is what this session is all about. You will learn that God wants to use your Spiritual Gifts, your Heart (passions), your Abilities, Personality and Experiences to minister to others in need.

GOING IN HIS POWER TO ALL NATIONS

God created you with a purpose. That personal, yet church- wide purpose, means connecting flawed human beings with our perfect and eternal God.

Your own story of how God has worked in your life is one of the most effective tools you have for connecting people to God.In this session, you’ll learn to communicate that story to your neighborhood, workplace and around the world.

OVC LIFEgroups are small groups of 6 to 12 adults that meet regularly in homes and apartments across the South Bay. These community groups provide people with the opportunity to grow in their relationship with Christ, and to connect with others who will encourage and care as they do life together.

LIFEgroups are an integral part of what we do here at OVC. We believe that true life change occurs as we are growing in our relationship with Christ, and that this happens best when we prioritize intentional relationships with others who are seeking this same goal.  In a LIFEgroup, people study God’s Word together and discuss the issues and challenges of life.

Join a LIFEgroup, learn some new things about God, about yourself, and make some new friends in the process.

SHARE - Doing life together as we tell the world around us about the love of Jesus Christ

CARE - Walking alongside each other through both the highs and lows of life
PRAYER - Praising God for who He is and asking Him to intervene in the lives of others.
